Worried about surgery?

I have a bottom jaw that is slightly to large for my mouth. I have been offered surgery to realign it properly but this involves breaking and changing the jawline, and I know it will be very painfull. I was just wondering If anyone has had this done or knows anything about it, because I would like to know how it went and if it has improved your life?
