Can you explain Broome, Australia to me?

I have this picture of the beach in Broome, Australia, but I've never even been in the southern hemisphere. Does the desert meet the ocean? That's what it kind of looks like. Is there any stretch of land on the beach along that coast that you could live on in private? Any other info of the general area would be great, thanks.
